9 July 2011 update - Wallington exhibition open today

The 'Unfinished Business' exhibition at Wallington Hall is now open. Here are a few images showing how the 6 paintings I am exhibiting are situated in Wallington Hall. They are located on the pillars at the entrance of the William Bell Scott mural room at the east corridor of the house.

2 July 2011 update - 'Unfinished Business' at Wallington Hall

Exhibition dates: Saturday 9th July – October 2011

http://unfinishedbusinessatwallington.weebly.com/ally-morton.html

Here is a preview of the paintings that I am showing for the National Trust at Wallington Hall in Northumberland from July 9th to October 2011. The paintings are re-interpretations of poems by the british artist and poet William Bell Scott whose perhaps most famous work is on show at Wallington Hall.

A ghost, 2011, Oil on canvas, 32.6 x 42.7 cm approx

From ‘A Ghost’ by William Bell Scott
In the first watch of the night,
One candle all my light,
I saw a Spirit near the door
Standing raised above the floor,

Age, 2011, Oil on canvas, 75.4 x 55.3 cm approx

From ‘Age’ by William Bell Scott
Behold, a breadth of distant sea,
Between the hills on either hand,
Ships bearing from some unknown land
To other land unknown to me.

Love and death, 2011, Oil on canvas, 40.5 x 31.1 cm approx

From ‘Love and death’ by William Bell Scott
now I hear
The quills of thy unquiet wings with fear
Quiver against thy flanks: no more withstand

The Sea, 2011, Oil on board, 41 x 31 cm approx

From ‘The sea’ by William Bell Scott
These froward waves, we feign they try
To utter to us some mystery:

As above so below, 2011, Oil on canvas, 30 x 24 cm approx

From 'The Tide' by William Bell Scott
Till it was round us everywhere,
Deep enough to be our grave!
For this is still the destined way,
We are the masters, yet the prey.

Rocking horse, 2010, Oil on Canvas, 55.4 x 43.2 cm approx

From 'A Lowland Witch Ballad' by William Bell Scott
The old witch-wife beside her door
Sat spinning with a watchful ear,
A horse's hoof upon the road
Is what she waits for, longs to hear,

I have around 6 paintings that are about to be finished which I will get photographed and added to the website soon. In the mean time a couple of other opportunities have come up including a group show at Gallery North curated by Alli Sharma from Transition Gallery and a proposed project to create work to be exhibited at Wallington Hall, Northumberland as part of William Bell Scott’s bicentenary. Here are the Gallery North details:

Fade Away: 5th – 26th May at Gallery North, Northumbria University.

There will be a symposium and publication launch on the last day of the show, 26 May from 3-6pm with a reception afterwards.

The symposium will comprise a writer, curator and artists panel. The publication is called 'About Painting' and covers two exhibitions, 'Working Against The System' and 'Fade Away' with images, artist statements, interviews and essays.

Artists involved:
Henny Acloque, Phillip Allen, Tim Bailey, Nathan Barlex, Mike Bartlett, Alice Browne, Lindsey Bull, Nick Carrick, Clem Crosby, Theo Cuff, Kaye Donachie, Sarah Douglas, Sarah Dwyer, Andrew Graves, Paul Housley, Thomas Hylander, Hannah Knox, Laura Lancaster, Robert Lang,Sarah Lederman, Eleanor Moreton, Mali Morris, Alex Gene Morrison, Ally Morton, Nadia Mulder, Jill Mulleady, Mahali O’Hare, Scott O’Rourke, Joanna Pawlowska, Joanna Phelps, Benjamin Senior, Rachel Sharp, Helen Smith, Shaan Syed, Zack Thorne,Gavin Toye, Helen Turner, Claire Undy, Phoebe Unwin, David Webb, Robert Welch, Andy Wicks, Jo Wilmot.

Fade Away, which is curated by Alli Sharma, with an accompanying text by Barry Schwabsky, features paintings that oscillate between representation and abstraction. With widely diverse references and subject matter, they all share a strong material presence. Whatever the creative enquiry, they make you think about paint and the act of painting.

Some of the Fade Away artists work directly from the perceptible world; others use the representational as a point of departure into the abstract, or conversely, explore the abstract, which reveals itself as subject. The dialogue between surface and illusion, representation and abstraction performs a paradoxical balancing act where surfaces are brushed, scored, erased, layered, revealed, dripped and collapsed. Compositions teeter on the verge of illegibility where images emerge and fade away.
